I appreciate articles that delve into nutritional components of foods. More is needed as more “food” products come to the market. That being said, I would like to encourage the interviewers and the interview subjects to do their homework regarding animals. Farmers don’t give their animals hormones, they haven’t since the 1970s when it was banned by the USDA. There’s a set of naturally occurring hormones given to bulls when they’re castrated and no-one gives antibiotics to healthy animals. It will be hard to find an ethical farmer that gives antibiotics or hormones to healthy livestock. Feeding the animals antibiotics fosters antibiotic-resistant bacteria and giving them hormones would lead to a myriad of problems genetically that you don’t want in livestock. And it’s why hormones are banned. Some smart marketers realized that people will pay premiums for meat with certain labels. I could go on but I’m already writing an article on this which I’ll publish shortly. Functional medicine practitioners need to better understand agriculture and livestock management before they make general statements about how the meat available to consumers is raised. They can’t be catalysts for positive health habits change, but they do their patients and followers a disservice by not having all the facts.
